It’s time to stop saying ‘unsolicited dick pics.’ Here’s why.

“When language is used that minimises an act it can have significant impacts including people not taking victim/survivors seriously, certain behaviours being excused as ‘not a big deal,’ and consequently people may find sexual consent difficult to navigate in practice as non-consensual behaviours become minimised and normalised through language”.

A woman’s greatest enemy? A lack of time to herself.

A woman’s greatest enemy? A lack of time to herself.

“Unlike the male artists, who moved through life as if unfettered time to themselves were a birthright, the days and life trajectories of […] female artists were often limited by the expectations and duties of home and care.” An interesting read by Brigid Schulte in the Guardian.

Women aren’t better multitaskers, turns out they just do more work

Women aren’t better multitaskers, turns out they just do more work

Multitasking has traditionally been perceived as a woman’s domain. A woman, particularly one with children, will routinely be juggling a job and running a household – in itself a frantic mix of kids’ lunch boxes, housework, and organising appointments and social arrangements.

But a new study, published today in PLOS One, shows women are actually no better at multitasking than men. READ MORE HERE

Just a reminder #WomensEqualityDay

Just a reminder #WomensEqualityDay

On #WomensEqualityDay don’t use words for women like ’empower’ and ‘celebrate’. Use words like ‘hire’, ‘promote’, ‘pay’, ‘raise’, ‘bonus’, ‘invest’, ‘fund’, ‘enrich’ – and DO IT. Leaders, ask for that employee pay spreadsheet, find the women on it, raise their pay to the same as that of the men doing the same job. It’s as simple as that!

Women helping women is good business.

Women helping women is good business.

“As a new entrepreneur bringing something new to the table in soft skills development, having a strong female support network has been essential. Supporting other women is as essential to me as air and water… it’s a reciprocal relationship (stronger in some than others) that has nurtured me and help me to manifest some of my biggest ideas.” Kate Katz,  All Hands Workshop owner. “Women in Conflict Zones” Book Presentation

“Women in Conflict Zones” Book Presentation

On Saturday April 13th 2019, at 4:00pm, NeMe Arts Center will host a presentation of Anna Prodromou’s book “Women in Conflict Zones – A Collection of Interviews of Cypriot Women” which showcases a collection of interviews featuring Cypriot women from different backgrounds and cultures. The book attempts to shed light on women’s oral histories that uncover the ways in which women navigate through conflict. The book breaks the convention of what is commonly understood as conflict; conflict is seen as any situation in which the rights of women are being challenged or violated. These situations are unfortunately not only restricted to circumstances of war or conflict, but they extend, without exception, into all sectors of society.

The book will be introduced by Costa Constanti, Political Analyst, and Nicoletta Christodoulou, Associate Professor in Curriculum Studies and Instruction.

The presentations will be in Greek.

            FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Women in Conflict Zones book launch.

«A must-read primer for anyone interested in women and peace in Cyprus»

The book Women in Conflict Zones – A collection of Interviews of Cypriot Women by Anna Prodromou showcases a collection of interviews featuring Cypriot women from different cultures and backgrounds.

The launch will be held under the auspices of the Australian High Commission in Cyprus on Thursday April 4th 2019, at 18:30 at the Centre for Visual Arts & Research (CVAR) in old Nicosia. Introduction of the book will be delivered by Antonella Mantovani, Representative of the Latin Community of Cyprus and book reviews by Agnieszka Rakoczy, Polish Journalist and Sophia Papastavrou Faustmann, Ph.D. Canadian Senior Gender Consultant, MENA Region.

An oral history testimony at its best. A must read.”

— Mine Atli, Women’s Rights Activist

“I stand in awe of Anna’s determination, courage and effort, not just for creating this book, but also establishing this initiative. I also stand in awe of the women portrayed in this book, with respect to their struggles and achievements.”

— Costa Constanti, Political Analyst

“A must-read primer for anyone interested in women and peace in Cyprus… Read this book! Kudos to Anna for her passion, engagement and rigorous methodology to gather and put all this together.”

— Dr Elena Hadjipavlou, Big Data & Communication Expert

The book creates a safe space in which the multiple dynamics at play in the contemporary Cypriot environment can be discussed, while also engages strongly with the consequences of the Cyprus conflict commonly referred to both by the national and the international community as the ‘Cyprus problem’; conflicts are frequently fought on the bodies of women – a reality that has long been avoided in Cyprus.

The launch is open to the public but RSVP is encouraged at [email protected]
